Following the lead of www.formafantasma.com, I designed this site to use a default system typeface, avoiding unnecessary HTTP requests and minimizing energy consumption. ︎Non-essential images have been dithered, a process that reduces their size and makes webpages significantly less resource-intensive.

“Only Fiction”documentary short, 2023

In California’s arid and beautiful Mojave, the stories we have told ourselves about deserts produce stranger-than-fiction realities. In this experimental nonfiction film, we tell yet another: of shrinking, toxic, man-made seas, the ghosts of gold mines and unbuilt cities, and those who live amidst them.

	Assemblage
	book, digital installation, 2021

Assemblage is a hybrid project: part book, part online installation, part map, all as an act of noticing. It represents a relatively small geographic area in the desert of Southern California (roughly 2360 km² around the coordinates 35.134027, -117.899947). The area contains, among other things, California City, the California City Correctional Facility, a section of the LA aqueduct, and the Rio Tinto borax mine.
In Vibrant Matter, Jane Bennett introduces the ‘assemblage’ as a framework for the experience of thing-power, one mode in which what-we-might-otherwise-call-objects force us to notice their self-organization and internal vitality. It is my argument that there is a place-power (akin to thing-power) which we might define as the agency of a place, completely separate from human action or intention.
In my project, each place (aqueduct, prison, mine, and city) is illustrated on semi-transparent tracing paper. As with objects, it is easy to look straight through a place; invisibility-via-familiarity. But when the places come into an assemblage—when the sheets are stacked on top of each other—some semblance of opacity is achieved. In their co-presence, they become more than the sum of their parts.Creating the assemblage book and website was an attempt to participate in intentional noticing. As Anna Tsing writes, “noticing is just what is needed to appreciate the multiple temporal rhythms and trajectories of the assemblage.” I am also indebted to feral atlas for a significant amount of inspiration.

	On Sand
	public art, 2021

On Sand consists of 500 individual glassine envelopes containing sand grains from the Rhode Island “desert” and a text insert with poetic quotes about sand’s materiality. Each envelope was hand-stamped with a wax seal before being distributed across Providence, RI using multiple channels: tear-off flyers, library books, and direct delivery to randomly selected mailboxes.
This distribution abstractly mimics the process of desertification (spreading sand) while also inviting a momentary encounter with a material that tends to go overlooked but is foundational to… everything basically (architecture! digital technologies! glass! food systems!). The mission is to make a project feel monumental not due to size or spectacle, but rather via the cumulative, incremental power of the granular. To play with sand's unique properties: its scarcity (500 individual envelopes), its value (ornate design with wax seals), and its unpreventable affinity for dispersing and scattering across space (distribution).“To have at last for herself the sandy substance of all things, to touch the flinty structure of existence. That is why she does not take her eyes off those sands, her gaze penetrates one of the phials, she burrows into it, identifies with it, extracts the myriads of pieces of information that are packed into a little pile of sand.”

	The Face Box
installation, 2020The Face Box was created in March 2020 and exhibited as part of a larger installation by the Collected Collective. It consisted of two parts:

a black box containing an iPhone camera, a light, and reflective papera large-scale live projection of the camera’s video feed, delayed by ~25 seconds
Upon entering the exhibition, in a small coat room, guests would find the box waiting along with a written invitation to look inside. Those who chose to stick their heads into the box’s interior would find that they could see warped reflections of their own face in the wrinkled silver paper that lined the inside.

Then, once the guest entered the main room of the exhibition, they would be confronted immediately by the projection of the camera’s video feed. Because the video was delayed, the timing almost always worked out that guests would see their own face upon entering the installation space.
By far the most fascinating part of the project was watching guests watch themselves.
The Face Box utilized relatively common and accessible digital technologies including the Apple iPhone camera and Facebook Live. This was out of practical necessity, but also reflective of the Box’s thematic affiliations, including digital surveillance and social media

While the Face Box was primarily my project, it would not have been possible without my collaborators, especially Eli Kaplan, Anna Kerber, and Léane Pajot.︎︎︎ back to art index

Artist Statements
I document connections and interactions.I use stories (lovingly), research (slowly), and cameras (carefully). I do my best to respond:

Basically,
“The master’s house began to collapse on its own long ago. Use any and all tools you can get your hands on and speed the process. Demolish the master’s house carefully enough to recycle the building materials and make tiny houses for everybody. With any leftover materials, we’ll make small books.”1
or scripts. Even when
“This script is not good writing. I think that has everything to do with it. On the other hand, human life isn't necessarily well-written.”2
Nonetheless,
“The mission is to rewild the mind. The mission is to create a first draft of a thing so that others may have something useful to revise.”3
Because
“We are at stake to each other”,4
and really,“The task is to become capable, with each other in all of our bumptious kinds, of response.”5
